Kyo-Yuzen’s pattern painting course

Experience Overview

Why not experience the traditional dyeing technique of Kyoto, yuzen zome (dyeing)? Yuzen is a dyeing technique developed from around the mid-15th century.
In this shop, you can experience a technique called “surikomi yuzen (brush dyed yuzen)”. Choose a stencil you like, and use a brush to dye patterns. Create an original, one-of-a-kind work of art.

Recommendation Points

It is held in a building with a good old machiya (traditional townhouse) atmosphere.
You can have a first-hand experience of the traditional technique of yuzen dyeing.
It is close to the national heritage Nijo Castle, and is very convenient to stop by during sightseeing.

Let's Start

Choose the one you like out of a variety of stencils. You can pick multiple stencils as well.
Dye with the taught method. An intense moment.
When you get used to it, you will be relaxed enough to pay attention to the angle or the overall balance.
You can continue your work until you are satisfied with it. Do not rush. Take your time to finish it up.
《Furoshiki Wrapping Experience》
Additional furoshiki (traditional Japanese wrapping cloth) wrapping experience/a combo plan with yuzen dyeing experience are also available

Learn the history of furoshiki, then try it for yourself.
After finishing the standard hakomono (box product) wrapping, learn “mamusubi (reef knot)” which has strong frictional force.
Master how to tie a furoshiki handbag, so you can use it when you unexpectedly shop for something.
You can make your own handbag, according to the pattern of the size of furoshiki.

Visitor Feedback

I was very excited to check if it was dyed properly, the moment I removed a stencil.

Since I could pick as many patterns as I liked, it became a truly original work of art.

I also liked the fact that I could work at my own pace, without worrying about the time limit to complete it.

Message from Staff

Small children as well as first-timers can enjoy it without concern.

We would also like visitors to look at the historical architecture and the beautiful garden.
